Rwanda reports a significant gain in tourism receipts this year and this has greatly helped in increasing the foreign exchange earnings of the country. Reports from the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) show that more tourists have been received in Rwanda this year and thus more tourist dollars have been received by the country if compared with the previous years. All this was established during the celebration of World Tourism Day, an occasion that was used to reflect on how Rwanda is investing in its tourist tourism sector.
The Rwanda development Board also plans to increase its earning in the next two years by embarking on more marketing campaigns to make the country known to tourist originating countries. The tourism board reports that over $293 million were collected from leisure and adventure tourism. All these receipts were obtained from tourists who visit the country and visit the national [parks, cultural sites, and more tourist sites that wre within the country. Though most tourist go for the famous Rwanda gorilla safaris in Volcanoes National Park, there are reports that more tourist have been attained in Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park. Many tourist also visit genocide memorial sites including Kigali Genocide Memorial Site, Nyamata Church, Murambi Genocide Memorial and more.
The RDB looks at investing in facilities to meet the growing demand, most especially for the meetings and conferences. The country is becoming a hub for conference and convention tourism and many business travelers choose Rwanda as the best country in the East African region to hold meetings and conventions. The Kigali Convention center which is the largest in East and Central Africa is yet to be opened and will attract many safari visitors to the country.
Though Rwanda’s economy depends on several sectors , tourism remains at the top of the country’s foreign exchange earners and has also retained a share of international business. The country‘s opportunities to grow its tourism services are broad given that the country is becoming the most favorite destination for gorilla trekking, popular adventure activity on which tourists visit the mountain gorillas in the wild. The country has also invested a lot in the air travel and Rwanda is more accessible than many destinations in Africa .
In order to improve the safari sector, Rwanda is on course to implement the national tourism master plan which is designed to guide the sector’s contribution to economic growth in line with the 2020 vision.
There are also initiatives which are aimed at meeting the growing tourism demand in Rwanda. The country has also invested in other infrastructures which will help in seeking the investors for spa and golf resort hotels along Lake Kivu and the cable cars system on the slopes of the volcanoes National Park. More so, a new cultural village will be set up to showcase a spectrum of the nation’s heritage in the setting. This will help in improving the safari sector with in the country.
The tourism initiatives which have created a lot of revenues have greatly helped in giving back to the community which has helped in funding the community projects across the park, these include; schools, and the hospitals around the parks and also support for community owned projects. The target of Rwanda is to grow tourism revenues by 25% annually, diversify tourism experiences, develop and expand the needed infrastructure and also focus on service delivery and capacity building to enable the sector to grow.
